Our Story.

Carter Ferguson was established more than 36 years ago in Gerringong by Tim Carter and Lloyd Ferguson. Deb Russell purchased the business in 2012 and has worked hard to create a law firm where our clients always feel comfortable and assured, at a time when they can be facing difficult situations and decisions. Our team takes great care and pride in the service we offer; a commitment that’s consistently reflected in repeat business and regular referrals.

Every day, the Carter Ferguson team focuses on making a positive difference to the lives of our clients and the greater community. Our approach is simple: we treat our clients like we would want to be treated ourselves.

We understand seeing a solicitor often happens at a low point of one’s life. It can be stressful at the best of times. This is why we always endeavour to foster positive relationships with our clients and other professionals to develop an atmosphere of trust and support.

Our approach starts with the non-traditional setting of most of our offices. Wherever possible, these are bright and cheerful with comfortable waiting rooms where our staff will make you a cup of tea and give you a biscuit. We like to meet with our clients in an informal setting, rather than the more stuffy and formal approach taken by many legal firms. We speak with our clients, rather than to them – to ensure we meet their goals and expectations, providing a clear understanding of their matter from the outset.

Big believers in collaboration, our solicitors freely share their knowledge and experience with each other to achieve the best results. Personal development, professional development and work/life balance is highly valued and encouraged. Today, approximately half of our team enjoys flexible working arrangements, creating a more positive working environment and a more caring and client-focused service.

Carter Ferguson is committed to giving back to our communities through significant pro-bono work and community legal services. Each year, our team members volunteer for a variety of local organisations – an approach we warmly encourage across all levels of staff and each office.

Originally a single-office business that has expanded to six offices in just five years, Deb continues to be guided by her vision that treating people with compassion and respect sits at the heart of a high-performing business.
