Areas of Expertise

Sandy is an Accredited Specialist in Property Law with extensive experience in a wide range of property matters.
He provides specialist advice and legal services to a range of clients including property developers, local government authorities and private landowners.

Sandy operates at the value-added end of Property Law, with a strong focus on property development and planning, joint ventures and major sales and purchases. He has acted for the developers of some of the largest residential subdivisions in the Illawarra.

Sandy also has expertise with Old System title, including title conversion and possessory applications. Sandy acts in rural land transactions and subdivisions, and has experience in compulsory land acquisitions, both for the acquiring authority and for the dispossessed landowner.

Over many years of practice Sandy has developed a deep practical interest in and knowledge of easements and restrictive covenants. He has delivered papers on these topics to the Southern Group Institute of Surveyors NSW, the South East Australian Surveying and Spatial Information Congress 2009, the International Federation of Surveyors XXIV FIG International Congress 2010 Sydney and FIG Working Week 2012 Rome, as well as the University of Wollongong CLE program.

Sandy became a partner in the Kiama law firm Kearns & Garside in 1973 and played a pivotal role in the firm becoming known across the Illawarra, South Coast and beyond for its expertise in Property and Planning Law. He became a partner in another large regional law firm when Kearns & Garside merged in 2005.

Sandy also has strong community links and is a life member of Kiama Rugby Club, Kiama Alpine Club and Kiama Show Society. Sandy was Show Society president in 2005 and 2006, and on behalf of the Show Society was also Kiama Wine Show chairman from 2004 to 2010.

The Carter Ferguson head office is located upstairs in Millers Arcade in Gerringong. Deb Russell actually did her work experience here, way back in 1988 when the business was still owned by its founding partners, Tim Carter and Lloyd Ferguson.
